Engaging Stakeholders in the Gulf of California to Inform a Catch Shares Design Manual for Mexico

New York, NY, United States of America

Project Location:
Mexico
Project Goals:

This grant will support the Environmental Defense Fund’s efforts to promote use of catch shares to manage and restore failing fisheries in the Gulf of California. Funding will go towards drafting a manual and teaching seminars regarding catch share practices. Catch shares grant individual fisherman the right to harvest a given percentage of the total allowable catch, a total that increases as a fishery recovers. As the fishery recovers, each share becomes more valuable so fishermen gain a direct financial benefit from protections for nurseries and fragile habitat. The draft manual will be finalized and made available in both print and electronically to better reach a variety of stakeholders.
