Expansion and Consolidation of a Payment for Ecosystem Service Policy Framework in Brazil and Latin America

$575,000

2016

Among its many programs, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) works to promote public policies that establish financing for conservation and unlock public payment-for-environmental-service mechanisms (PES) for private landholder benefit in Brazil and elsewhere in Latin America. This grant from the Tinker Foundation will enable TNC to provide technical assistance to governments that are working to increase adoption and implementation of payments-for-environmental-service mechanisms.

In Brazil, TNC will provide legislators with technical information to better understand the new Brazilian Forestry Code and support the development of managing agencies with appropriate funding mechanisms. Project goals ultimately include the implementation of water tariffs to support watershed conservation costs in Brazil, Costa Rica and Peru.
