Alianza Pro Bono (APB) was founded in 2013 with the purpose of institutionalizing pro bono culture in Peru. It provides legal assistance to individuals in situations of poverty or vulnerability and to the organizations that assist them. Over the last two years, it has reviewed 248 pro bono cases, with each member firm participating in a minimum of five cases. This case load represents more than 6,700 hours of donated legal time.
As with other pro bono institutions in Latin America most cases are brought to Alianza Pro Bono via a clearinghouse system, currently run by a partner NGO. This grant from the Tinker Foundation will support Alianza Pro Bono to consolidate as an independent and autonomous clearinghouse and to strengthen its role in the Peruvian legal community. Alianza Pro Bono intends to expand its network by incorporating new local partners and member organizations, and to engage more actively in its mission to promote access to justice. It will increase the number of attorneys working pro bono, increase Alianza Pro Bono's capacity to take on more cases, and explore the potential for participating in public policy debates and strategic litigation.
