Beatriz Jaguaribe

Beatriz is a prominent Brazilian interdisciplinary scholar in Latin American Cultural Studies. Her scholarly works range across various fields such as Cultural Geography, Cultural History, Landscape Studies, and Visual & Communication Studies.

Jaguaribe obtained a PhD in Comparative Literature from Stanford University in 1986 and she has completed post-doctoral programs in Argentina, France, and Spain.

She has been a professor at the School of Communication of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro since 1994. Since then she has been a visiting professor at Princeton, The New School for Social Research, New York University, and Stanford University, among other academic institutions. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Andrés Bello Chair (NYU), an ICAS fellowship (NYU), and is a researcher at the CNPq in Brazil. 

Dr. Jaguaribes's overall academic work focuses on three distinct thematic issues: urban imaginaries; inventions of the self in literature and visual culture, and representations of Latin American modernities and nation-building with special emphasis on Brazil. 

Some of her most important scholarly publications include the following books: Fins de seculo cidade e cultura no Rio de Janeiro, which focuses on Rio de Janeiro during 19th and 20th centuries.  The second Mapa do maravilhoso (2001) is a photographic/literary work on contemporary urban aesthetics in Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro: Urban Life through the Eyes of the City (2014) is a book of essays on realism in current media representations of Rio de Janeiro. In addition to these works, Beatriz Jaguaribe has published several articles in English.

Dr. Jaguaribe serves as General Coordinator of the Arquivos Abertos das Cidades Latino-Americanas which is a collaborative project that brings together archival research, training, and cultural activities in Rio de Janeiro.
